Okay, let’s be clear on one thing. Hospital staff don’t set out to harm their patients. Most are conscientious and hardworking, but hospitals are not the bastions of care and professionalism they once were. The NHS is under pressure, doctors and nurses are often overworked and the pressure is intense. Mistakes do happen. Carelessness creeps in and things get forgotten.
And one thing that often gets forgotten in the rush are the elderly and infirm. Bedsores, or pressure sores as they should be called, form when people spend too long in bed and are not turned on a regular basis.
Many patients are unable to turn themselves, so have to rely on the nursing staff and support staff to do this for them. It is not a particularly glamorous side of the job, but needs a professional and thorough approach.
It’s been documented by some experts that if an at risk patient is not turned every two hours, then a bed sore can start. So you can see the problem. A busy day, staff missing, or too many calls upon precious time, a patient gets ignored and before you know it, a problem can develop.
No one has intentionally set out to cause harm, but what many don’t realise is that a bed sore can develop into such a severe wound that death can be the result. These are not innocent skin abrasions which will go with time – once formed, they need serious medical help to sort them out.
