Bedsores are caused by neglect of a patients’ needs. Officially known as pressures sores, or decubitus ulcers, they arise because a bed ridden person is not turned often enough.
Most are caused by the compression of tissues. And in the majority of cases, the compression arises from the force of bone against a surface, such as a hard bed sheet.
The way that pressure sores are avoided is by turning a patient regularly so that no one single part of the body remains in contact with the same skin surface all the time. Some experts say this should happen every two hours, although others say that four hours is sufficient.
Patients who develop a bedsore have to turned regularly so that the wound is not made worse.
Care homes, hospitals and nursing homes all should have strict procedures laid down in order that patients do not suffer from a bedsore in the first place, and if they do, then recovery becomes a priority.
And specialist care centres should be equipped with the necessary equipment in order to cope with patients who suffer from these type of complaints. Pressure-distributive mattresses can be used to reduce the pressure on certain parts of the body. Furthermore, air cushions can also be used to reduce pain.
